madison Horn, Missionary to Kiev, Ukraine
About Madison, or Madi:
I am a 21 year old missionary from Gas City, Indiana. If someone would have told me two years ago I would be a missionary, I would have laughed. But, I'm the happiest I've ever been! How did I get to this place and become a missionary? I found this organization called Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and attended their Discipleship Training School (DTS) in Lakeside, Montana.
What's a discipleship training school? From YWAM.org, "The Discipleship Training School seeks to develop a more intimate relationship between God and the student.” It also gave me an opportunity to search and discover my passions and my part in God’s purposes for the world and for myself. The school focuses on those who long to follow Jesus in new and exciting ways with a different perspective. The school is full-time and lasts five or six months consisting of two phases: lecture and outreach. In the lecture phase, I learned the background for the mission work—about God’s movement in His world. The outreach phase focused on applying the coursework in a cross-cultural experience.
Completing the DTS changed my life, and I experienced and encountered God in ways I had never imagined. I have discovered my calling - to bring light into darkness, to take the gospel to the nations, to serve. I now know that my life has purpose and that I have a father in heaven that loves me with an unconditional love. I am now able to walk in freedom, because of the gospel, because Jesus died for my sins and the chains that were holding me down are now gone because of what Jesus did on the cross--for me, for you, and for the nations. My heart is to share that good news with everyone I meet. There is freedom in the gospel when you truly take hold of it.
So, how did I get to Ukraine?
I spent my two months of the outreach phase in Ukraine. During my time there we partnered alongside YWAM Kyiv and YWAM Ternopil and the different ministries they have - English clubs, cafe ministry, youth groups, bible studies, family ministry, drug/alcohol addiction ministry, orphanage ministry and refugee ministry. It was so awesome to see that God is working on the other side of the world. It was so cool to see people that are so hungry for the gospel, and the country's own people are eager to learn to evangelize and want to reach out to their own people.
The second week of outreach we (my team of 11, including myself) were praying for the campus and I got this picture. At the YWAM campus in Kyiv, there are a couple buildings under construction. In my picture, those buildings were complete, there were new buildings, and the campus was full of students and staff. I felt like I was a part of this picture. A week or so later, the campus leader asked me if I would want to come staff the fall DTS. So I prayed about it, and I know this is what God wants me to do. God wanted me to make a two year commitment, so I did.
During my 2 years in Ukraine, I will continue to serve in those ministries. I will also staff Discipleship Training School. I will be able to walk alongside students as they learn and grow during this season of life. I will be able to help them, teach them, pray with them, pray for them, guide them, love them, point them to Jesus, experience DTS with them. I'm so thankful that God chose me to be in Ukraine this next season of my life. I'm so thankful to have the privilege to staff DTS and see more lives be transformed.
I'm so thankful for Bethlehem Christian Church and the friendship and partnership we have! Visiting this year was a huge blessing and I felt right at home!! I know that this all was orchestrated by God! The way we met was a crazy story, and it wasn't even through my brother (that attends the church). It was through my friend Morgan, and her video that she shared with the church. It still blows my mind when I think about it. I'm so thankful for your hospitality and your prayers and your support!! I could not have made it to Ukraine without you!
