Bethlehem Christian Church was first organized in 1847, and the church flourished until 1862 when it was devastated by war. It was reorganized in 1866. It has continued an unbroken program of service since that time. The first organizing preacher was Dr. William B. Wellons, who came down from Southampton County. One of the earliest leaders, Thomas J. Kilby, having joined Bethlehem on November 22, 1848, became a leader in the organization of the Southern Christian Association.
